A Peculiar Tribute

Space here can not yet be prepared to explain the unusual quirks of circumstances which lead to what follows. And what follows is this - a tribute collection of Raw Mommies songs performed (allegedly) by The Snufmeg Chamber Ensemble. Contained in "Johnny B Dub Conducts the Snufmeg Chamber Ensemble Performing Selected Interpretations of Songs by Raw Mommies" are five classics from the Mommies repertoire in a style no one expected.

The curious duality of serious deference and absurdist parody intertwine themselves in, despite reasonable resistance by any rational listener, an unconventional yet, almost, enjoyable experience. Not taking more than 19 minutes, the Ensemble ranges from nearly faithful recreation ("Renea") to fantastical and whimsical ("Ratio of Pig (Fantasie)").

The obvious cross-pollination between the mercurial world of Snufmeg and the Cheese Mites, of which Johnny B Dub is a member, and the Raw Mommies becomes more apparent in this collection. Hinted at over the years, by way of the sharing in a smattering of content ("Mutual Attraction" has found its place in the two worlds, similarly "Action's Lament" and various motifs, such as the closing section of "Cell Boy"), this compendium speaks more to bridging those worlds than any genuine necessity to pay the homage alluded to in the title.

Nonetheless, though certainly not the anticipated event for the casual Raw Mommies enthusiast, this provides a delightful alternative prism by which to enjoy their music.

The Artifact Known as "The 'I Don't Know Yet' Variations"

Recorded in 1995, allegedly, this was in the last days of the regrettably brief career of the Mommies. Neither an album nor single, it is a document of the band in the "creative process" for a song which was rarely afterwards performed due to the imminent discontinuation of activities.

For Those Who Need a Refresher - The Debut "Raw Mommies"

Recorded during 1992, this six song album was a cassette only, limited run. Few copies wound up into few hands, listened to by few ears. However, it's legend grew. These songs remained staples of virtually every performance over the years.

In it we hear the first mix of Billy's thunderous drums, Keith's visceral bass, Kevin's acid-drenched guitar, and John's guitar accentuations, all led by Scott's wildly theatrical and diverse vocals.
